      The Lincoln Land Leathernecks Marine Corps League Detachment 1174 held their Installation of Officers Banquet Saturday evening January 7th at the Greenville VFW Hall.  Honored Dignitaries present were Greenville Mayor Alan Gaffner; Department of IL Commandant and IL Pack Leader Greg Baker;  57th Chief Devil Dog and Department Jr. Past Commandant C.O. Smith;  Department Adjutant and Kennel Deputy Watch Dog Robert Weber;  Department Quartermaster and Aide de Campe to the 57th Chief Devil Dog, Tom Geise;  Department Sgt At Arms Bob Kappes;  Department Chaplain Jim Carleton;   MCLA National Sr. Vice President, Department MCLA Jr. Past President, and Unit President of the West Central Illinois Leathernecks Carol Smith;  Department MCLA  Chaplain and 4th District Vice President Jan Carleton;  7th District Commandant and Assistant Kennel Police Dog Ronald Burns, Sr.;  Past 7th District Commandant Daphine Kappos;  Past 7th District Commandant Mark Brown;  Collinsville #74 Commandant Frank Christie;  Litchfield #1385 Commandant Luke Funk;  and the Heartland Young Marines of Mt. Vernon, sponsored by members John Kwalski and Ed Vaughn.
 
          Our Guest Speaker was Past 7th District Commandant Mark Brown of Detachment #1031, Jerseyville who gave a very moving speech on dealing with the life and death of a loved Marine.  Mayor Gaffner gave a speech of appreciation for having this Detachment in his city.  Daphine Kappos explained the significance of the POW/MIA table and the Missing Man table that are always displayed in remembrance of the ones who cannot be with us.

        The Installing Officer was Greg Baker, Department of Illinois Commandant.   He spoke to the crowd of over 100 about the dedication and commitment this Detachment has given not only to the Department but National and Kennel.

 The following were the new Officers sworn in:
         Commandant:   Ronald Burns, Sr. of Lebanon
        
 Sr. Vice Commandant:  Daphine Kappos of Wood River
         Jr. Vice Commandant:  Richard Niepert of Mulberry Grove
        
 Judge Advocate: Ray Hughes of Sorento
         Adjutant: Daniel Betts of Pocahontas
         
Paymaster: Herbert Knobeloch, Jr. of Mascoutah
         Sergeant At Arms: Roger Holtgrave of Trenton
         
Chaplain:  Henry Steiner of Mulberry Grove
       
  Web Sergeant and Historian (Appointed):  Daniel Betts of Pocahontas
 
Special Awards were presented to:
      CC Food Mart Corporate of Breese was presented a Plaque thanking them for providing us with a means of raising funds each year which we then turn around and donate back to the community.  Each of the five CC Food Mart stations (Lebanon, Hamel, Carlysle, Pierron, and Greenville) were also presented a framed Certificate of Appreciation for working with us.  Accepting for CC Food Mart in both cases was Linda Goodin of Greenville.  Soni Andrews of CC Food Mart O'Fallon was also presented a separate Certificate of Appreciation for her individual support to the Detachment fund raisers.

      Jack Brock, United States Army,  of Lebanon was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his work during the last calendar year with the Detachment fund raisers.  A friend and willing helper to the "Old Corps" that makes up most of our Detachment,  a Vietnam Veteran and community activist, Jack is one great GI.
 
     
Commandant Ronald Burns, Sr. was presented with the Distinguished Citizen Medal, Silver level, by Department Commandant Greg Baker for his tireless efforts in making the Detachment one of the best in the Department.   This is the highest award a Marine can be presented by Department Commandants.
 
    
The Detachment Marine of the Year is voted on by the Detachment each December and the Award presented at this Installation.   They vote for the Marine that they feel exemplifies the ideas of the Marine Corps, the Marine Corps League, and the Lincoln Land Leathernecks. This year's award was presented to Herbert Knobeloch, Jr.  of Mascoutah, IL. He received an engraved plaque,  a Marine of the Year Medallion and Ribbon.

For the last two months the members had sold raffle tickets for a Ruger Model AR-556 Rifle.  The winner was Andrew Miller of Mulberry Grove. He was given the choice of the rifle or $500 cash.  Mr. Miller chose the rifle and it was transferred over to him by a local gun shop.  During the Installation Banquet tickets were also sold for a 50/50 raffle;  bottles of specially ordered and labeled wine;  2 magnums of wine engraved with the 57th Chief Devil Dogs' signature and the Department Commandant's signature; and articles of clothing and equipment.  All of these funds will go towards community donations during the coming year.
