Installation of Officers January 13, 2007
The Lincoln Land Leathernecks Marine Corps League Detachment 1174 held their Installation of Officers Banquet Saturday evening January 13th at the VFW Post in Greenville. Special guests attending were State Representative Ron Stephens and his wife, Greenville Councilwoman Lisa Stephens, and Greenville Mayor Alan Gaffner.
Representative Stephens, who is a Vietnam Veteran, gave a stirring, memorable speech about the war in Iraq and our great men in uniform who could win the war if the politicians would stay out of it. He also talked about Lisa's first husband who was a Marine. And, of course, since he was a paratrooper, he closed his speech with a few jokes about the Marines. Lisa Stephens spoke about being married to a Marine and being part of the Marine Corps Family. She also talked about their son's decision to volunteer for a third tour in Iraq. Mayor Alan Gaffner talked about his family's support and prayers for our military. He also talked about the great year we've had in Greenville which would not have been possible without the sacrifices of our Veterans who fought for the freedoms we all enjoy. All three received standing ovations. The Installing Officer was National Vice Commandant Central Division, Jim Hackbarth from Dixon, IL. Mr. Hackbarth is also the National POW/MIA Chairman. He explained the significance of the POW/MIA table that is always displayed in remembrance of the ones who cannot be with us. Also attending was Mr. Hackbarth's Aide de Camp, C. O. Smith, the Commandant of the West Central Illinois Leathernecks in Jacksonville, IL.
